Bead & Jewellery Magazine

issue 141 Beading inspiration can strike anytime, anywhere… from a walk in rain-kissed green hills to strolling round a gallery filled with ancient artefacts. Jennifer Airs came up with a design for a bracelet in the shower. She told us: “I was thinking about waves and how I could represent them in beads. I thought about using different sized beads and Peyote Stitch to make curves, and realised that alternate blocks of upward and downward curving Peyote would look like waves.” You can see the lovely result on P54-55. Anna Lindell was inspired by a challenge-theme centred around ‘The Elements’ to create her rainbow lighthouse earrings using Cubic Right Angle Weave. And flowers peeping through the ground, heralding the arrival of spring, no doubt contributed to Carol Smalley’s daffodil necklace, complete with bracelet and earrings, using lucite flowers, leaves and glass pearls. Her colourful creation brings a bright, fresh look to our front cover. That’s a simple stringing project but if you want a flower-themed project that’s rather more challenging, then take a look at Lynn Davey’s Rose Garden Collar. Lynn admits the design does look “extremely complex” but she reassures us that it is based on a very simple structure of a Peyote strip. Do have a go, and take comfort that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Lynn tells us: “When making the flowers, if you don’t have quite the right number of beads in the final round, don’t worry; just miss one out somewhere when adding the petals. If you look at real flowers you’ll see that they usually aren’t perfect, either.” Lynn created her gorgeous Garden Collar in shades of pink, but other colour schemes will work very well and, as Lynn suggests, “would be lovely made in pearl and crystal to wear with a wedding dress”. Denise Shaw introduces us to Cellini Spiral, a variation of tubular Peyote Stitch, with a beautiful bracelet.
