WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT…
Peas please our columnist, but she doesn’t like to buy them in the supermarket – and not just because of the threat of trolley collision…
Food for thought.
PEAS
“If you don’t like peas”, wrote Lemony Snicket, “it’s probably because you have not had them fresh.” Which is a very good point. Unless you’ve had them ‘fresh’ from the vegetable aisle of the supermarket.
If ever there was a vegetable less suited to the supermarket system than the pea, I’d like to hear about it. Just the sight of those over-ripe pods, all set to do their natural twist-and-flick that hurls the peas off into the soil, upsets me. Why? Because I know they contain the fresh pea at its hard-as-a-bullet worst.
