SALUTE TO POLAND’S HEROES
In the January 2022 issue of FlyPast, we salute the heroism of Polish aircrew in World War Two by featuring the Historic Aircraft Collection’s superb Spitfire Mk.Vb BM597 on the cover. Photographer Darren Harbar goes air-to-air with this famous British warbird and outlines the aims of the Polish Heritage Flight, which also operates Hawker Hurricane G-HURI. Thanks to the efforts of HAC and others, the sacrifice of airmen of all nationalities will not be forgotten.
MIGHTY VULCAN
Designed as a nuclear deterrent and finding fame as a more conventional bomber in the Falklands campaign, the distinctive, delta-winged Avro Vulcan must rank as one of the most popular and famous British aircraft ever made. In our special Classics section, Steve Beebee and Richard Clarke reflect on both the type’s fascinating origins and the famous return to flight of XH558.
PEARL HARBOR
They called it the ‘day of infamy’. Respected author Thomas McKelvey Cleaver details the build-up, attack on and importance of Pearl Harbor to America, supported by stunning contemporary imagery from the lens of Philip Makanna.
