The AEV 3 Kodiak is a Leopard 2-based armoured engineering vehicle that is designed for a wide variety of battlefield engineering, infrastructure and support roles. These roles include minefield breaching, route denial, dozing and digging tasks, and the erection or demolition of obstacles. The vehicle was originally developed for a Swiss Army requirement by the consortium of Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH (Germany) and RUAG Defence (Switzerland). Development began as long ago as 2002, and the first contracts were signed with the Swiss in 2007. The first vehicles were delivered in 2011. Since then, the Kodiak has been purchased by Sweden, the Netherlands and Singapore. Most recently, in May 2021, the German Bundeswehr signed a contract for the manufacture and delivery of 44 Kodiak. The first example will be produced in 2023, with deliveries to be complete by 2029. The AEV 3 Kodiak will be known as the Pionierpanzer 3 (PiPz 3) Kodiak in German service.
