The M113 was an armoured personnel carrier that was first used in large numbers during the Vietnam War. It was given the nickname ‘Green Dragon’ by the Viet Cong. Although the M113 was the most widely used armoured vehicle used by the US Army during the Vietnam War, it was not well adapted to typical combat in jungle and urban environments. The aluminium armour (maximum 44mm wall thickness) did not offer the crew sufficient protection and could be penetrated by heavy machine gun fire. The crew was also relatively unprotected around the upper hatches, which was quickly recognised by the Vietcong, so that the crews were targeted here, which led to considerable losses. Eventually, it was the South Vietnamese allies who remedied the situation. A lot of improvisation was used at the beginning and almost everything that could be used for additional armour and protection was used. This resulted in the ACAV version, which was used by the South Vietnamese army
