Recreating a busy open water event in the pool will get you ready for the real thing!
At this time of year many swimmers are preparing to head outside, perhaps for the first time (northern hemisphere). The following will help you transition from pool to open water a little more smoothly. There are some skills we can recreate in pools that will help make us better open water swimmers. It is not just the temperature to consider – the leap to swimming in a lake, river or sea compared to a pool is quite something if you are still contemplating the shift. Even after many years as a pool swimmer, my first triathlon was quite a shock as I swam in the London Docks with hundreds around me and no straight lines to follow. It took a while, practising regularly, but eventually I preferred open water to pool swimming.
