Plastic free CHALLENGE

Plastic is used in products from cooking to clothing and construction. Katie Hainbach shares 10 ways to help reduce plastic consumption

Plastic has only been in mainstream use for the last 70 years but it is designed to last a long time and, as such, nearly all plastic ever created still exists today! US scientists have calculated the total amount of plastic ever made is over 8.3 billion tonnes, more than 70% of which is now in landfills. Much of it also sits in the wider environment, including in our oceans. Of all the discarded plastic globally, only about 9% has been recycled.

This summer a BBC crew documented footage of the devastating impact of plastic pollution on marine wildlife. It is estimated that over 150 million tonnes is in the world’s oceans and has caused the deaths of countless marine creatures. Sea birds are starving to death as parent birds unwittingly feed plastic to their chicks. With insufficient nutrition and stomachs filled with plastic, they are unable to set out to sea to fend for themselves.
