In A Dill Pickle by Katherine Mansfield, we’re going to look at the function of memories in short stories. This story covers the length of time it takes two people to sit and have a cup of coffee together, but it also encompasses their memories of more substantial periods of time they spent together six years earlier.
As always, you will benefit most from the master class if you read the story for yourself: https://writ.rs/adillpickle The first thing to note about this story is the way that Katherine Mansfield takes us straight into the action. There is no preamble or scene setting and, somewhat unusually, she starts the story with the word ‘and’, giving the reader the sense that they are entering into an already ongoing stream of thought.
