‘There’s a big office upstairs with a nice view of the railway and the cathedral, but I write in the kitchen because I like to be near the kettle. I write best in the morning, which I’m disappointed about because I’m quite good at staying up late with my laptop in bed, but there’s no point because my brain doesn’t work in the same way. I have resolving thoughts in my first waking moments: it’s magical. I send myself notes on my phone then go back to sleep.’
