In a new series, we chart the ups and downs of a film novice learning the mystical ways of the darkroom; Tim Clinch has more handy Lightroom tips; Eddie Ephraums considers whether smartphones make us better photographers; Lee Frost goes in search of the perfect print; and Tim Daly experiments with hand tinting.
Landscape photographer Chuck Kimmerle comes under the B+W spotlight as he talks artists’ statements and kit disasters; Susan Burnstine focuses on Henry Horenstein’s images celebrating the peculiarly American phenomenon of country music; Colin Harding reveals the work of a pioneering astronomical photographer through the National Media Museum’s archives; and Tim Clinch reflects on the pleasures of picture taking.
Plus, Andy Luck puts the Olympus OM-D to the test, we checkout six of the best portable hard drives, news, exhibitions, the 46th book to make it into our classic library, your monthly photographic challenge and our favourite readers’ images.

Very good magazine in need of some fresh perspectives

For the most part, I find B/W Photography Magazine essential reading: well-written; informative and with a good balance between different styles and methods. I especially like features about photographers and their work, the news and the book section.

I have one reservation. Apart from Lee Frost, I no longer read any of the staff writer/photographers. I feel that it is time for some fresh ideas and new perspectives.
