‘Nature abhors a vacuum.’ Often attributed to ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, it’s a statement that divides opinion. But regardless of what happens in nature, the urge to fill up any empty space rings true for humans in a consumer-driven society. It could be the music or podcast that steals the silence of your daily commute, the TV show that uses up the spare half-hour before a gym session or the social media scrolling between tasks and any hint of a second with nothing to do. Time that would otherwise be spent in silence or lost in thought is often crammed with colour, noise, adverts and information, which equals overstimulation 24/7.
