Cage & Aviary Birds  |  No.5797 Little & Loud
LAST OCTOBER AT Stafford I had the pleasure of
meeting that splendid birdman Nigel Hewston,
chairman of the Avicultural Society. We had plenty
to talk about, including an idea of Nigel’s that I
instantly liked, for the AS to sponsor a budding
aviculturist on a specialist course at the prestigious Durrell
Conservation Academy in Jersey – Cage & Aviary Birds to
assist with publicity. Now, with the vital help of Tim Knight
at Durrell, it’s all coming to pass, as you can see by the
course application form we’ve included on page 5.
So, come on you readers: if you’re under 25, or know a
young relative or friend who would benefit from the expert
tuition at the five-day Avian Egg Incubation Workshop this
November – complete that application form for this year’s
Raymond Sawyer Scholarship, and post it to me. Don’t
forget to explain as fully as you can why you’d benefit from
the course. And may the best applicant win!
This week it’s a case of “So. Farewell, then...” to a senior
colleague, none other than Cage & Aviary Birds publisher
Stephen Curtis, who’s moving on to a senior role with our
fellow Kelsey magazines Antiques Roadshow and
Psychologies. Stephen also enjoyed a previous incarnation
as C&AB’s head man, and I’d like to pay tribute by sharing
this historic image (below) of a typically elegant Stephen in
1988 meeting the Stone Roses – er, I
mean Scholes and Robinson. (Dig those
Madchester haircuts, fellas!) Thanks
and best wishes, Stephen.
