Microsoft to fix 24H2 flaw that blocks security updates
Microsoft is working on a fix for a flaw in Windows 11 24H2 that prevents some PCs from downloading security updates.
It confirmed in December that computers updated using physical media such as CDs or USB sticks between 8 October and 12 November 2024 may be unable to receive critical security patches in future, leaving them vulnerable to attacks.
WHAT WE THINK
In terms of features, version 24H2 is the best Windows 11 update yet. But it’s also had more problems than any other major update. It’s likely these have deterred many people from upgrading to 11, which would explain Windows 10’s recent revival (see box below). Once again we wonder whether Microsoft truly appreciates the scale of the disaster coming in October, when it axes support for one billion computers. In the meantime, we’ll reveal ways to fix these 24H2 problems in our next issue – out Wednesday 29 January.
