OUT WITH THE WINTER FUG and cupboard clutter, and in with the fresh spring air and a more organised way of living – and eating. Everyone’s kitchen can do with a seasonal purge and those empty cupboards and fridge will be begging to be restocked with fresh healthy staples

Your cleaning checklist

WORK YOUR WAY around the kitchen, cleaning from top to bottom and leaving the floor until last. Make a checklist of key areas, and enjoy ticking them off…

CUPBOARDS

Empty out those crowded food cupboards and wipe surfaces with an antibacterial cleaner. Check dates as you put everything back – especially on herbs and spices. Throw out flours and grains with signs of weevils (tiny moving black specks) and out-of-date canned foods, which can carry the botulism bacteria (see right). Once opened, jars of curry paste, jam, mayo and pickles, etc are best stored in the fridge, but keep an eye on use-by dates.

THE KITCHEN SINK

Even though it gets a wash every time you run the tap, bacteria thrive here, so it’s best to clean with a bleach solution daily – and wash and change dishcloths regularly, too. To prevent dreaded drain smell, tip a handful of soda crystals and 1tbsp bicarbonate of soda down the plughole, along with a kettleful of boiling water. Let it fizz, then rinse with another kettleful of boiling water.
