EVENING PRIMROSE OIL

From helping skin health to managing the menopause, EPO is a herbal remedy being taken seriously by the scientific community

WHAT IS IT?

Native to North America, evening primrose is a biennial lowering plant. The oil comes from its seed and has long been used medicinally. The indigenous peoples of the Americas used its leaves, roots and seedpods to treat haemorrhoids, wounds, gastrointestinal complaints, sore throats and skin problems. These days, lots of people use it for menopausal symptoms, dry skin and breast pains.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Evening primrose oil (EPO) contains fatty acids, plant sterols and polyphenols. It’s extremely high in linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated essential fatty acid that the human body can’t synthesise, so you have to get it from food. It’s thought to contribute to the proper functioning of human tissues thanks to its anti-inlammatory properties, and supports healthy skin because it prevents loss of water through the epidermis, and improves skin softness and elasticity. Beneicial efects of EPO have been shown for atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and even as an anti-cancer therapy.

About Healthy Magazine

Introducing the brand new healthy! We’ve got a fresh new look and have spruced up our content, including challenging new franchises, a dedicated vegan section and inspiring real life stories. Our central theme this issue is mental wellbeing – a challenge that doesn’t seem to be getting any easier, even as we are getting better at talking about it. Hopefully our ‘safe space’ is just that – somewhere you can explore and develop your own mental health. We’ve also investigated the gender disparity in football, explored the growing (though illegal) trend of microdosing, and chatted to chef turned wellness advocate Lorraine Pascale about her own mental wellbeing journey. Plus, we’ve brought in an expert panel to review all our content, ensuring you’re getting the very best and latest health, fitness, food, beauty and wellness advice.
