SHARPTONE
Over the past seven years, Stepson have been inflecting their angsty, yet fragile post-hardcore with more hints of electronics and pop sensibilities. Changes like these often precede bloated pop-rock, but this Aussie five-piece are breathing new life into melodic metal by merging their restless hardcore with pop punk-style heartsick moodiness and lovelorn lyricism. Help Me, Help You begins by combining the arena metal of Sempiternalera Bring Me The Horizon with 21st-century emopunk lyricality, attacking with throat-ripping power on Run and Deeper Sleep. Stepson return to more familiar territory with the electronic-infused I Wish, before adding synthesised atmospherics that perfectly enhance the melodrama of Come With Me. Help Me… is feverishly passionate, ambitious and hints at many intriguing avenues to be explored in the future.
