MULTIPLE special trains often run in the Czech Republic in September and October, after the summer holidays, and this year, prior to the restrictions for next Covid-19 pandemic ‘wave’ later in the year, was no exception.
Most of the special trains are aimed at the general public, with low fares, and operate relatively short distances but often involve historic locomotives or DMUs and / or lines that are not normally open to passengers.
Private freight and charter operator Východočeská dráha (East Bohemian Railway) has a small fleet of Czechoslovak-built vintage diesels, all maintained to a high standard. One of them, No. 751 232 is seen at the end of the normally freight-only Tovačov branch on October 17, with the 11:42 special to Kroměříž. Fares for the 40km round trip were around £5.

Czech Railways (ČD) keeps part of its large museum collection at Olomouc depot. In conjunction with an open day there Soviet-built ‘M62’ design diesel No. T679 1529 and Czechoslovak-built No. 749 250 worked a shuttle service on October 9. No. T679 1529 (781 529) is seen at the depot turntable in between services.
