TRANSPORT for Wales says it is hoping to bring Class 230s into passenger service by the end of the year after a technical problem led to the latest delay to their introduction.
A target of May was abandoned following a battery overheating incident the previous month, understood to be the second in less than a year.
The root cause was established after what TfW’s transport operations director Alexia Course described as a “very detailed safety and engineering investigation”.
A solution was found, involving the fitting of a replacement component, but in addition to the time needed to obtain, fit it and get safety certification, the situation has been compounded by the delay being long enough to render driver competency invalid.
