LOWLY
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
BELLA UNION
★★★★
Although describing themselves as pop, Danish quintet Lowly are mostly a world away from the expected tropes of Scandipop. Seasons slinks past like Dubstar, The Fish and Nothing Much share the shuffling groove of Doves and the title track has the hard-won optimism of Badly Drawn Boy. If they gloomily mope along like a hungover a-ha on Feel Someone, that’s atoned by the astonishing You Are Good And I Love You: a total earworm, featuring a rare use of vocal treatment adding to Soffie Viemose’s compelling charisma. There’s often an indefinable magic at play here.
