IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT, AND A FIRED UP GARY NUMAN FEELS FAR FROM FINE ON THIS OFTEN SAVAGE COLLECTION
It feels like Gary Numan’s been predicting the end of the world for a lifetime, and all that’s changed – as he’s gradually transformed from 1979’s wan, well-dressed ‘machman’ on the cover of Tubeway Army’s Replicas to today’s Mad Max-style war painted survivor on the cover of this, his 19th album – is his tailor. His dystopian visions, however, have become increasingly timely. 2017’s ferocious Savage (Songs From A Broken World) earned him his highest chart placing in almost four decades, and Intruder, which addresses the currently deteriorating state of the environment from the perspective of earth itself, with much of it written and recorded before the pandemic arrived, is clearly well-timed for those seeking catharsis.
