Steel, aluminium and glass desk by Raymond Cohen – £6200 at Bellmans.
In the 1950s French designer Raymond Cohen and his firm Cohray were producing a range of ultra-modern furniture that – although made for the machine age – were all put together by hand.
Each Cohray item was made to a commission and output was limited. A mid-20th century Cohray steel, aluminum and glass desk was among the 230 lots from the estate of Sir David Tang (1954-2017), the multi-millionaire Hong Kong entrepreneur and philanthropist, offered at Bellmans (22% buyer’s premium) at Billingshurst on May 13. The 7ft 7in (2.32m) wide bowfront desk lacked its original glass inserts desk and was estimated at £200-400 but sold at £6200.
