Manchester boasts vibrant cultural, musical and sporting scenes, not to mention, it’s a haven for foodies, too and they don’t neglect vegans, either. Located on Lloyd Street (Deansgate), is The Allotment. Famed for their 10-course taster menu, sustainability is at the core of their values. Plus, The Times recently named them the Best Vegetarian Establishment in England, 2019. We spoke to Dan Robinson, head chef at the restaurant, to find out more.
We are all about serving great tasting, beautifully presented vegan food. We want to show the world the versatility of vegetables and prove that there is more to veganism than bean burgers. The name was created by the original owner, and it suits the style of food we serve – our main ingredients are fresh and, where possible, locally sourced. We use a vegetable supplier who states where the food comes from, so we try to choose ingredients that are in season, in our area and grown as locally as possible. We are about to start working with a local mushroom grower in Manchester, too and we use some ingredients that have been foraged nearby. Also, we recently signed up to the app Too Good To Go (toogoodtogo.co.uk) to help reduce wastage of perfectly good food. Plus, we use eco-friendly and compostable takeaway packaging.
