When Adjustment Layers and Blending modes provide so much creative potential, it’s easy to forget that W pixel-based Layers can extend the available options. Working on copies of the Background Layer is one of the easiest ways of doing this, because you can apply several effects at once, including techniques that require pixels to work. Adjustment Layers, as versatile as they are, don’t have pixels, although the file size is much smaller.
