My first taste of activism came aged seven, when an oil tanker ran aground off the coast of Shetland, threatening devastating environmental consequences. I was so upset, I wrote to the prime minister demanding answers and received a letter from Mr Major a few weeks later promising to do all he could to minimise the impact of the spill on local wildlife. I couldn’t get out there and clean the beaches myself, but I wanted to do something. I had a voice and I wanted to use it.
