WHY WE LOVE
WORDS DANIELLE MUSTARDE, PHOTO CHRISTIAN TIERNEY
Hailing from Galway, we love LAOISE’s mix of synth, soul and badass pop. Here, she speaks to DIVA about performance, sexuality and music as activism.
DIVA:How did you get into music?
LAOISE:I saw an orchestra on TV when I was probably only five and said to my parents, “I want to play the violin!” From there I learned the traditional Irish fiddle and grew up playing in sessions and in pubs. We’d play, then stop to take a break and someone would sing – and that’s when the whole pub would go quiet and listen. The instrumental music was cheerful and upbeat, but when somebody sings and they’re pouring their heart out, people stop and listen and I just thought, “I want to do that”.
