This 17th century Japanese lacquer cabinet made for the Western market, c.1680, is decorated with a scene of Dejima island and a procession that includes members of the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
The head merchant of the VOC is shown carried aloft in a palanquin. A comparable pair of cabinets featuring depictions of Dejima are currently on special loan to the Rijksmuseum from the Royal Dutch Collections, at Huis Ten Bosch Palace.
