“I had three major ambitions as a player: to play for Swansea City, my hometown club; to play for Wales; and to play in the top flight, which I managed to do for the first time when I joined Crystal Palace in 1991. I made my senior Wales debut in the same season that I signed for Palace, coming on as a substitute in a game against Austria at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion. I scored the equaliser with seven minutes left as we drew 1-1 – it was just a tap-in from Lee Nogan’s cross, but I was absolutely overjoyed as you can imagine! I was only 21 at the time.”
