INTERVIEW
JOSE FONTE
The former Southampton defender helped Portugal to glory in 2016 – now he wants yet more success, after a fine season at Lille
What are the expectations back home in Portugal for Euro 2020?
When you’re the champions, everyone expects you to compete for it. But we’re not the favourites – we’re just one of the teams that have aspirations to win it, like Germany, France, England, the Netherlands and Spain. But we will be in the fight, that’s for sure.
Is this Portugal team even better than the team that won Euro 2016?
Quite a few people have asked me that, but I always say that the team that won the Euros in 2016 has to be the best – because we won the trophy. Until we win something with this team, the best one is 2016 – although we have a lot of young players with great ability. In 2019 we won the Nations League, also with a few of the young players that are coming through now. But we have to keep winning to prove that this is a great generation.
