We already know that time spent in green spaces is good for the soul, but now UK researchers have found that if you pick a rural or coastal location, it’s even more beneficial than an urban park or common. More than 4500 people participated in the study, which showed these landscapes brought about a greater sense of contentment. When people visited areas with protected or designated status, like national parks, the improvements were stronger still, leaving them feeling relaxed, refreshed and connected to nature. For an even bigger emotional boost, they needed to spend 30 minutes or more soaking up the scenic surroundings. Crashing waves, rolling hills, dense forests – this weekend, get yourself out into some proper countryside.
