“Just sweat the big stuff ”
Leading physician, broadcaster and health journalist Dr Norman Swan on eating, exercising and ageing in the right way
MY LIFE IN HEALTH
As told to Cheryl Freedman
How you cook is as important as what you eat. People often sweat the small stuff, such as focusing on individual vitamins. What they miss is what happens when you put everything together. The second-longest-lived people in the world are Greek-Australians, who mostly eat fish, legumes, vegetables, and not too much red meat. These diverse ingredients translate to your gut and general health. Greek-Australians also tend to eat with friends and family, so they get social support. The problem comes when we get home late from work, maybe we’re living alone as we get older and we can’t be bothered to cook – you tend to eat a less varied diet.
