HIDDEN DANGER OF BEER
A new book has highlighted how men who consume excess alcohol and fructose could be at risk of cardiovascular disease, erectile dysfunction, and cognitive decline.
Dr David Perlmuttter, author of Drop Acid, says elevated levels of uric acid, created when the body breaks down purines found in products like beer, anchovies and dried beans, can be linked to weight gain and high blood sugar levels.
The book (available from drperlmutter.com) offers advice on how diet changes to lower uric acid levels can have a positive impact on weight.
Are bald men too salty?
While many men lose their hair as a result of hereditary conditions, it’s possible that excess salt in our food could also be a factor. According to trichologist Kevin Moore, this is because excess sodium in the blood can prevent essential nutrients reaching our hair follicles. Along with lowering blood pressure and risk of cardiovascular disease, this is another good reason to choose no-added-salt options where possible and stick to the NHS-recommended 1 tsp a day limit.
