Is this the human of tomorrow? PAGE 26
Welcome to the special 200th issue of How It Works. The Six Million Dollar Man was a popular television series about an astronaut who nearly dies in a test flight, only for his broken body to be rebuilt with bionic implants that endow him with enhanced abilities. While this was 1970s science-fiction, we’re within a decade or two of being able to augment humans so that we can run down speeding vehicles and pluck steel bars from their fittings. Human-brain interfaces and exoskeleton suits already exist as examples of how much technology has evolved in 50 years. As this converges with artificial intelligence and genetic engineering, a world where superhumans exist is a distinct possibility.
