JUNE 4

BRITISH ATHLETICS LEAGUE DIVISION PREMIERSHIP, Sport City

THE second round of the Premiership saw Sheffield pip Birchfield, who dominated the opening fixture. The two clubs – and Woodford Green with Essex Ladies

– swapped positions several times. It was so close that the three clubs were separated by only two points after 15 events with only four events left.

The early morning cloud lifted and let the sun shine down on the track, where the action opened with a season’s best – and near Olympic qualifier – for Shaftesbury Barnet’s Seb Roger in the 400m hurdles.

Then followed the 800m, which saw BUCS bronze medallist David Dempsey outlean European junior champion Kyle Langford, who was competing in his first two-lap race of the season, to win by just a hundredth of a second in 1:50.19.

As the day progressed it was difficult to predict which club would emerge victorious as the spoils appeared to be shared. There was a fine double victory for Rory Chesser and the appropriately named Samatar Farah for Newham & Essex Beagles in the 3000m steeplechase with a great exhibition of front-running, while Birchfield’s European junior medal winning-due of Leon Reid and Elliott Powell claimed a double in the 200m. Powell also got to the line first in the B 100m in 10.81 but his partner in speed Reid was unable to match his team-mate and was beaten by the tightest of margins into second by Newham’s David Bolarinwa in 10.54 to 10.55 in the A race.

Birchfield also did the double in the 110m hurdles, with Jake Porter taking the A race in 14.21 and Edirin Okoro the B in 14.45.

In the field, Woodford Green with Essex Green Ladies’ Mark Dry continued his great start to the season with another 70-metre throw of the hammer. The Loughborough-based man has already achieved the European Championships standard of 74.50m twice this year and will no doubt be looking to go one better and hit the Olympic mark of 77m soon.

Shaftesbury’s Zane Duquemin – another Rio hopeful – also had an impressive victory in the discus with a 60.23m throw to keep him just shy of the European Championships mark. It was, however, his second best mark of the season. Duquemin was unable to repeat the feat in the shot, though, with the win instead going to Woodford Green’s Anthony Oshodi, who threw 17.39m.

One athlete in action who has already reached the Olympic standard was pole vaulter Luke Cutts. The Sheffield man was well below his best of 5.83m with a vault of 5.10m, but it was still enough to win on a day when being out in the field too long could give you serious sunburn. Fellow Sheffield man Nicholas Cole was victorious in the B string, with 5.00m.

The 400m races also provided some competitive performances with Dwayne Cowan catching the eye with a 46.02 clocking. The Sale man now sits sixth in the UK rankings and could be someone to watch in the British trials later this month.

In the 1500m, a mere three and a half seconds separated the eight A-race athletes. Liverpool’s Harry Harper burst through the pack and win by just 0.19 from Newham’s Frank Baddick.
