Have your Madeira cake and eat it

The Portuguese island offers something for everyone, says Nick Byam

Best known as the birthplace of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo — and one-time home to the awful bust of him at the airport — Madeira has a landscape to attract thrill seekers and those after a more traditional sunshine holiday.

An archipelago in the north Atlantic Ocean, south west of Portugal, the island is home to fewer than 500,000 people and boasts a climate more in line with Morocco than Europe.

As a nervous lyer, it’s a relief to be on solid ground, especially as the airport’s runway is one of the trickiest to land on, built as it is on a clif.

If you like it hot, it’s the perfect place for some spring or autumn sun. We are here in the middle of February and the average temperature in the day is around 20C (68F) with the nights comfortable as the mercury hovers in the cooler mid-teens.
