WINNER AND RUNNER-UP
Two world-class champions were denied glory they deserved at the 1928 Olympics
Winner Lina Radke-Batschauer
Lina Radke-Batschauer (24, right), was born in Baden-Baden. She won several German championships at 600m and 1,000m, the standard women’s middle distances until the Olympics chose 800m. She was coached by husband, Georg Radke, and both advocated for women’s track and field to be better supported. The first German Olympic champion since 1912, Radke won the gold medal wearing a pair of spiked shoes specially designed for cinder tracks by Adi Dassler, whose company later took the name of Adidas.
