Running is an excellent way to keep fit during pregnancy if you were used to running beforehand. However, you may find that you encounter muscular niggles more often when running during pregnancy than you did before.
“This is because joints and muscles become looser during pregnancy,” says GP, Dr Nisa Aslam from Deep Freeze Cold Patch (deepfreeze.co.uk). “This happens because your body produces the hormone relaxin to relax ligaments in your pelvis in preparation for childbirth.”
This hormone relaxes ligaments and joints in other parts of your body too, increasing your risk of injury because looser ligaments are not as stable. As your pregnancy continues, you may not be able to run so far, for so long or so quickly. “Your centre of gravity changes too, which may contribute to reduced stability in joints,” says Dr Aslam. “Check with your doctor or midwife if you experience any vaginal bleeding, amniotic sac leakage, pre-eclampsia, chest or calf pain. Such pregnancy issues are likely to make running while pregnant a definite no-no.”
