Anyone paying even just the teeniest bit of notice to what’s going on in the world will have an idea about the damaging effects that climate change is having on our planet. From melting glaciers to unruly wild fires, recurrent floods, explosive earthquakes and so on, we can’t pretend we don’t know what’s going on.
And the reality is that we all have a responsibility to our planet, for the sake of our future and that of the next generations. Some planetfriendly choices have become standard practice of daily living, such as recycling household waste and ditching single-use plastic carrier bags, but we can all play a part in making our fitness routines that little bit greener. Every ecoconscious step we take can help to reduce the environmental toll humans have on the planet, and this includes the way we train. Here we share our must-try ways to green up your fitness routine.
Minimise the meat Refuelling with protein is an important part of any training plan. You probably know protein contains a macronutrient which helps repair muscle tissue after a workout, but did you know there are plenty of protein sources that don’t have to be based around animal products?
The Worldwatch Institute estimates that 70 per cent of the world’s freshwater supplies goes to agriculture and a third of this to grow animal feed crops. Likewise, livestock production is responsible for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions according to The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.
