The West Highland Way Race is more than a race. Fair warning, if you ever venture to the trail on midsummer’s weekend, be prepared to get drawn into the friendly fold of the West Highland Way ‘family’ for an unforgettable experience.
It’s an event with some serious history and beautiful traditions. Held on midsummer’s weekend since 1985, it was one of the first long distance trail ultras in the UK. Runners set off at 1am from the southern start of the West Highland Way in Milngavie, near Glasgow, and must cover 95 miles and 14,000ft of elevation gain to reach the northern terminus in Fort William in under 35 hours. The trail provides all sorts of terrain change; from runnable cycle path to rugged, technical miles along the banks of Loch Lomond and the spectacular yet punishing highland landscapes of Lairig Mor, where the hulk of Ben Nevis rears into sight and you can almost smell Fort William.
