Those of you who have had many dogs over the years may be well aware of how challenging adolescence can be. Some dogs sail through it, but some don’t and as trainer and behaviourist Jackie Drakeford says in her article ‘The terrible teens’: “most of us have etched in our minds the day when we put our sweet puppy to bed, and the next morning found the fairies had swapped him for a canine monster…” For those of you new to dog ownership, Jackie has lots of good advice on how to weather the storm, and if you’ve been lucky enough to avoid experiencing any teenage tantrums yet, good luck. But you might want to keep Jackie’s article to hand, just in case! Read it on page 10.
Other highlights in this issue include features on two remarkable charities. First up is Drone to Home, headed by retired police officer Phil James, which combines top of the range technology with social media to help reunite dog owners and their lost pets.
You can find out more about this fast-growing charity, with a social media following of over four million people, on page 14.
Paws on Plastic, which has recently attained charitable status, has
a simple message at its core, centred around dogs, the environment, and mental health, all key on-trend topics.
Established by former primary school teacher Marion Montgomery in 2018, the aim is to encourage dog owners to help create a cleaner and safer environment for our animals and wildlife by picking up at least two pieces of litter when walking their dogs. You can read the full story about this inspiring mission on page 18.
Finally, if you’re suffering from withdrawal symptoms because it’s almost a year since you attended or watched the world’s greatest dog show — Crufts — take heart. It’s only a few weeks away and you can make sure your know-how is up to scratch by having a go at our fun quiz on
page 38.
Enjoy this issue,
