Safari, Passkeys and Security
Start the transition away from passwords to Passkeys
P asskeys, integrated in Safari from version 16 and coming in other apps, work differently from passwords as they keep your private key safe in your keychain, and only release its paired public key. This should be immune to phishing attacks and security breaches, as without your private key an attacker can’t gain access to your account.
1 Switch to Passkeys
When a service supports Passkeys reliably, switch your account to use them instead. Keychain in iCloud ensures your devices sharing the same keychain can use them immediately.
2 Other devices
Provided they’re compatible with Passkeys, devices that can’t share your keychain can add Passkeys through QR codes created for that purpose.
3 Passkeys for 2FA
Use Passkeys as a second factor for authentication when they’re not available for the main service login.
