US crusty death metallers on fire after cheating death
Death metal’s latest trend has hardcore kids tacking moshpit muscularity onto the madness Possessed christened back in 1984. Fresh off the success of 2019’s The Grand Descent, and vocalist/guitarist Mark Whelan surviving cancer, Fuming Mouth have progressed beyond the battle-scarred-hill rumble of classic Earache. They now include melodic odes to cheating death like Kill The Disease, the prog flirtations of Postfigurement and Leaving Euphoria, and the raw sewage sonic assaults of Disgusterlude and the title track, driven by Mark’s undimmed ferocity. That it’s all tied together with well-phrased leads and strong arrangements makes this both a vengeful return and a powerful statement moving forward.
