The latest arrival from the Locomotion Models and Rails of Sheffield partnership is the ‘Precedent’, the London & North Western Railway’s recordbreaking 2-4-0. The Sheffield retailer and branch of the National Railway Museum have combined once again to offer a prestige model of a locomotive type that resides within the National Collection, with Bachmann Europe taking care of the production in this instance.
The ‘Precedents’, or ‘Improved Precedents’ to be more precise, proved to be a landmark locomotive design from the turn of the 20th Century. Entrusted with many of the LNWR’s important express passenger duties, they proved to be well up to the task and remained popular with footplate crew throughout their careers.
Four versions are being produced. Firstly – and exclusive to Locomotion Models – is No. 790 Hardwicke in LNWR lined black, as per the sole preserved example which currently resides at Shildon. The other three models are available from Rails of Sheffield and consist of No. 1673 Lucknow in LNWR lined black, No. 5018 Talavera in LMS plain black and LMS crimson No. 5036 Novelty, which forms our review sample.
