I want a model railway, and I want to make it really big with lots of different gauges, and it’s going to be really complicated with tracks everywhere, and sidings, and reversing loops and turntables, and I’m going to give it a really long name!’ It sounds as though it’s something a child would tell Santa while sitting on his lap at his grotto located in the local department store (yes, we know we are a little bit late!) but on this occasion it was the mindset of George Rashbrook, whose layout ‘Gricehaven, Bashmoor & Cranksome’ is a bit of a mouthful.
“Building what I would call a substantial model railway had always been a bit of a dream of mine. I had built a few smaller ones as a child, but they were relatively primitive, in terms of quality. When I lived in a flat I had a small ‘N’ gauge layout, but I couldn’t do a lot with it because of the space.
