What is it?
Built by the LMS at its Derby Works, the 630V DC third-rail units replaced elderly Lancashire & Yorkshire electric stock on the suburban services out of Liverpool Exchange. Serving destinations to the north of the city centre, to Southport and Ormskirk, the new trains entered service from 1940, operating as a mix of two-car and three-car units.
