Founded by renowned violinist Leonard Friedman in 1988, the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival July 2- 7, has become one of Scotland’s most brilliant island musical events. Featuring concerts at various venues around Mull, Iona, Oban as well as further afield in Scotland and England, the festival is a chance for promising young professionals develop their skills in the field along with professional mentors. Artists on this year’s bill include Leonardo Giovine, Antonia Kesel, Tom Congdon, Fiona Robertson, Christine Anderson, Andre Gaio Pereira, Feargus Egan and Josh Salter.
The repertoire will focus on Mendelssohn’s Octet, in a new edition by Richard Jeffcoat, who presents it in its original form, as written by the 16-year-old composer. Other offerings include quartets by Haydn, Dvorak and Shostakovich and a Mozart piano concerto. The concerts are free, and will be held in stunning, intimate venues, such as Iona Abbey, St John’s Cathedral, Duart Castle and Creich Church.
