Don’t throw away your old NAS
Many NAS devices continue to work well for many years, only for manufacturers to stop providing security updates – at which point the device is considered “obsolete”. The common advice is therefore to replace it. However, this only becomes a real problem if the device is connected to the internet.
In a typical home network, an older NAS can still be very useful – for example, as a file server or backup server within the local network. Such usage involves very limited security risks, provided that the device no longer has access to the internet. The most effective way to block internet access is at the network level rather than relying on settings inside the device itself.
