None in sight yet! And while not all AI-related “innovations” are actually distinct and useful, agentic AI does deserve a label of its own.
To define our terms, “agentic” refers to the pre-AI concept of an agent – a piece of software that acts automatically, without requiring a human to click its buttons. Early agents usually took care of simple tasks such as installing updates or blocking viruses, following fixed rules or instructions beamed over the network, but the new generation of AI agents are far more autonomous. They can use multi-step reasoning, act proactively and even update their behaviour based on past experience.
