OnePlus’ Nord phones promise a taste of the high end at an affordable price, and the new Nord 5 costs a very reasonable £399 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. That’s £30 less than last year’s Nord 4, a welcome reversal of inflationary trends. Then again, that phone had 12GB of RAM; if you want that this year, you’ll have to move up to the 12GB/512GB model at £499.
The Nord family is not known for its beauty, and the Nord 5 is one of the most boring-looking phones I’ve seen – a big, chocolate-bar-style box, offered in grey, white and ice blue. At 211g it’s slightly heavier than your average phone, and with its huge 6.83in screen it feels a little oversized in the hand.
