SPIROGYRA
The Future Won’t Be Long: The Albums 1971-1973 CHERRY RED
Landmark British folk-prog with hints of proto-punk and psychedelia.
Not to be confused with the similarly named American jazz/ funk/fusion band, this Spirogyra was put together by founder Martin Cockerham when he was a student in Canterbury around 1969. Over the subsequent years the band featured a number of musicians, but only Cockerham and eminent British vocalist Barbara Gaskin survived the various arrivals and exits. Never actively part of the so-called Canterbury scene, the band were influenced by the then-resurgent folk movement and late 60s psychedelia to produce music that had authenticity, yet reflected changing times and was socially and politically aware.
