Considering how much musical ground Mikael Åkerfeldt has covered with Opeth over the last 30 years, it seems only natural that he should make a gentle move into the world of soundtracks. Opeth’s music has long been rich with atmosphere, and on 2019’s In Cauda Venenum in particular, the Swedes’ sound took on, at times, a pointedly cinematic edge.
Whether that record was a dry run is another matter, but while the bandleader’s first foray into the visual realm contains plenty of music that sounds absolutely nothing like Opeth whatsoever, it also contains more than enough of Åkerfeldt’s established musical vocabulary to make perfect sense in the broader context of his entire catalogue.
